Alloy Wheels

How do you check whether an alloy wheel is damaged or unsafe to reuse?

Short answer: Look for cracks around the spokes, bolt holes and inner barrel, check the rim for bends or flat spots by spinning it or rolling it on a flat surface, look for deep corrosion or pitting and see whether the wheel has previously been welded or repaired, because cracked or bent wheels are not safe to use and are worth only their scrap value.

Cracks

Check the spokes, the area around the bolt holes and the inside of the barrel in good light, since cracks often start where stress is highest.

Bends and flat spots

Roll the wheel on a flat floor or hold it on a spindle and spin it, and watch for wobble that suggests a bent rim.

Corrosion and repairs

Deep pitting or signs of welding mean the wheel should not be sold as a safe used wheel, so be honest with buyers about what you find.
