Alloy Wheels

Are forged alloy wheels worth more than cast ones?

Short answer: Forged wheels are made from a stronger, denser aluminium alloy and often come from performance or aftermarket brands, so as used wheels they can be worth considerably more than ordinary cast wheels, but as pure scrap they are valued by weight in much the same way, so a forged set in good condition is worth selling as wheels rather than as scrap.

Forged versus cast

Forging gives a stronger, lighter wheel, and such wheels are usually found on higher-end or aftermarket sets, with markings that identify the maker.

Value as wheels

A clean set from a recognised brand can sell for far more as wheels than as scrap, which makes it worth checking before you sell.

Value as scrap

If the wheels are damaged, the forged label does not add value, and they are priced like other aluminium.
